In the novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck, write about a moral value that you would like to highlight in this story.
The novel that I have studied is The Pearl written by John Steinbeck. After reading this novel, I found out that determination is one of the moral values that I would like to highlight.
As one of the main character in this novel, Juana portrays her determination the most, all throughout the novel. It is proven when her beloved son, Coyotito got stung by the scorpion. Regardless of being in the lower society class, Juana insists on bringing Coyotito to the doctor. Living in the lower society class makes it impossible for them to seek treatment from the doctor due to the racial discrimination. Juana on the other hand, is determined to get treatment from the doctor because she knew that is the only way to save her beloved son. From her action, we as a reader should take Juana’s action as an example because without determination, we would not have the guts to try the impossible which Juana’s determination leads her to try the impossible which is by seeking a medical treatment from the doctor.
Other than that, from the moment Kino had the pearl in their life, Juana knew exactly that the pearl is evil and will bring misfortunes in their life instead of fortunes. This is where Juana shows her determination to destroy Kino’s beloved pearl. Although her attempt to destroy the pearl was a failure where she was badly hurt by Kino on her attempt to throw the pearl back into the sea, she did tried her best to follow her instinct to throw the pearl back into the sea. From this action, Juana taught us to be brave and trust our very own instinct when it comes to making a decision.
As for Kino, he managed to portray the moral value of determination at the first moment he had that pearl. He was determined to sell the pearl with higher price because he knew exactly how much the pearl worth. Kino also fights with all of his life when the attackers came to their house in the middle of the night to steal the pearl from him. Kino insist on keeping the pearl and fight with all of his life to protect the pearl because he had a dream that the pearl will release them from the poverty that have been revolving around them and will bring fortunes to his family. This shows the readers that determination is one of the factors that would not promise us to be success at once, but determination is one of the factors that will teach us how to be successful in our life. As a result, even though Kino did not managed save Coyotito, he managed to keep the pearl until the very end.
In a nutshell, this novel has taught me the true meaning of determination. From Kino’s and Juana’s action, I believed that determination is a need in a student’s life as it will help us to be stronger to face challenges in life.
